Concrete at the Crossroads
Vandalia has long been called the Crossroads of America because it sits where the National Road (U.S. 40) met the Dixie Highway, routes later replaced by Interstates 70 and 75. As concrete contractors, we see that location reflected in Vandalia homes: lots of commuters, lots of vehicles and driveways that work hard. The city had 15,209 residents and 7,091 housing units at the 2020 census, with only 4 percent vacant.
A long history, a newer city
Benjamin Wilhelm arrived in 1838, and the Village of Vandalia was incorporated on February 7, 1848. It became a charter city on January 2, 1960. With a history that long, Vandalia has homes of many ages, and plenty of driveways and walks that have reached the end of their life.
What wears out first
Aprons and drive entrances. The section where the driveway meets the street takes the most impact and often breaks first.
Garage floors. Decades of salt carried in by cars leave scaling and pitting.
Front steps. Older stoops settle and pull away from the house.
Patios. Small original slabs that have tipped toward the foundation.
For each of these, we tell you whether a repair will hold or whether replacement makes more sense.

Near the airport and the dam
Vandalia is the city closest to Dayton International Airport, where Wikipedia lists the elevation at about 1,000 feet; the city itself sits at 955 feet. Near Vandalia, the Taylorsville Dam, built in 1919 by the Miami Conservancy District, controls the Great Miami River. Whatever the ground, we check grade and drainage on every job, because water under a slab is the main cause of settling.
Between two rivers
Vandalia sits about 10 miles north of Dayton along Dixie Drive, between the Great Miami and Stillwater rivers. Where a lot slopes, runoff and the soil it soaks matter more than the concrete itself. We check where water leaves your property before setting grades, and we pitch new slabs so meltwater runs off them, not under them. Exterior pours are air-entrained for the freeze-thaw months.
What happens on pour day
The day before, we set forms and check grades. On pour day, the concrete truck arrives, we place and level the concrete, float it and add the finish. Control joints are cut once the surface can take it. We then protect the slab while it cures. You will get a short list of do's and don'ts: stay off it for a day or two, keep cars off for about a week, and seal it once it has cured.
Matching an old garage apron
Where the driveway meets the garage, the old slab often drops a little. We cut back to sound concrete and pour a new section that meets the garage floor flush.
Patios and stamped walks
A common next project after a new driveway is the back patio. We size it for how you use it and slope it away from the house. For a front walk or patio with more character, stamped concrete in a slate or brick pattern adds texture, and a sealer keeps the color strong.
Sheds and workshops
Garage and shed slabs for backyard storage or a small workshop need a thickened edge and a compacted base. We check setbacks before forming.
Permits
For an apron or public sidewalk, we check with the City of Vandalia about permit requirements before scheduling.

Vandalia Questions
Can you add a trailer pad to my Vandalia driveway?
Yes. We pour it thicker than a standard drive, on a deeper base, and tie it into the existing slab.
My garage floor is pitted. Do I need a new one?
Not always. If the slab is structurally sound, surface repair may be enough. If it is cracked and settling, replacement is better. We tell you which.
How long before I can drive on a new driveway?
Usually about a week, depending on weather. Foot traffic is fine sooner. We give you exact timing after the pour.
